COLUMBIA, SC (WTHR) — Lawmakers in South Carolina and Rhode Island want high schoolers to graduate knowing how to handle their money.

In South Carolina a proposed bill would require high school students to take a personal finance class and pass it to graduate.

The class would cover budgeting your money, paying bills, filing taxes and not getting into debt.

Two Rhode Island lawmakers as well as the state’s general treasurer have introduced a bill to also teach personal financing.

The lawmakers say financial education is “vital in setting young people up for success in life.”

36 states already have similar requirements.
